When I was in high school, I used to look through magazines, such as Seventeen, for style inspiration—anything ranging from clothes, make-up, hair or just the overall look of someone or photograph.
These magazines being mainstream, white models matched my white walls. When I was younger, I never thought too much about it, but being older, it just doesn’t sit with me.
I champion diversity in every aspect of life, yet not in my own bedroom? What part of the game is that?
So—and I don’t know what took me so long—I’ve started remodeling my room, now that I have access to wonderful publications, such as Latina magazine, that feature absolutely beautiful WOC with personalities that just jump off the page—like this stunning woman, right here—as well as great art direction.
She’s the first new thing I added to my wall and it’s re-assuring to finally look up and see her and others with skin and body shapes that more resemble mine. I’m so inspired and just looking for more like her to add because I’ve got a lot of white space to fill.
